TED, Technology, Education and Design, is a nonprofit organization that gathers innovative thinkers together to share new ideas. Many successful professionals in the business world have presented live speeches called TED Talks at TED conferences around the world. TED records and saves every talk to the TED Talks video archive, available to the public.

1. Dare to disagree
Margaret Heffernan, the former CEO of five separate companies, discusses the benefits of working with people who see things differently. Heffernan advises leaders to avoid “echo-chambers,” or partnerships where people share many of the same beliefs and opinions. Heffernan further asserts that disagreements and even arguments can spur creativity and help solve problems.
2. How to get your ideas to spread
Marketer and author Seth Godin welcomes professionals into the fashion business, that determines which ideas spread effectively and which ideas vanish from our memories. Godin suggests professionals market to the people who enjoy their product, assuring his audience that loyal customers will spread their ideas for them by advocating the brand with the people around them.
3. Build a tower, build a team
Designer Tom Wujec explains the importance of collaboration by describing a team-building exercise in which participants are asked to build a tower out of dry spaghetti, one yard of tape and a marshmallow. Wujec compared a team of kindergarten graduates to a team of business school graduates. The winners? The kindergarten graduates!
Wujec explains the reasons behind the bizarre results and argues that challenges provide shared experiences, shared language and a common stance to work efficiently. You can even try the marshmallow challenge with your fellow event profs or at an event!
4. How to speak so that people want to listen
Many people associate the word “weekend” with the words “rest,” or “relaxation,” or “YES!” But the word “Monday” is usually associated with “Ugh.” Words are important to us. Communication is crucial to understanding the world around us. However, many people feel that no one is listening to them.
Sound Consultant Julian Treasure, presents the “seven deadly sins of speaking” and offers us four keys to help make our speech powerful. Julian also shares some useful vocal exercises to try before your next event!
